Throughout recorded history, people have used flowers to express their feelings, enhance their surroundings, and to commemorate important rituals and observances. The knowledge of how our ancestors used flowers comes to us in numerous ways. All forms of art, depict the use of flowers: music, books, paintings, sculpture, ceramics and tapestries are only examples of some of the sources of information regardinge the use of flowers in past times. Some of the most opulent examples of source material for us are the flower pictures produced by artists during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, which so accurately dipict flowers in their incredible beauty.

The Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens was originally established in 1936 as the School for Apprentice Gardeners. It remains a unique location for studying gardening and obtaining the knowledge necessary to grow and maintain the landscapes of the Park System. With an increase in magnitude and quality of the plant collections, the school campus was officially declared a Botanical Garden in 1990. Since 1936, horticultural excellence has been the emphasis of The School of Horticulture. The training program is designed to enable all students to obtain practical experience by daily participation in horticultural activities. The students are responsible for the maintenance and development of the Botanical Gardens.

From the exquisite Sunken Garden to the charming Rose Garden, this show garden still maintains the gracious traditions, in one of the loveliest corners in the world. The Gardens were designated in 2004 as a National Historic Site of Canada.
