Tiffany Glass - Stained Glass History
Born in 1848, Louis Comfort Tiffany would become famous for his stained glass artworks.
Tiffany’s ultimate success was the result of he was born into great wealth, and was surrounded by all the beautiful things money could buy. This great wealth also afforded him the chance to travel the world, where he studied with many of the great artists of his era. Being brought up with a strong sense of commerce, he always had a head for business, which would come into play later in his life. He also possessed a sense of adventure and innovation that led him to experiment with new and unique ways of attaining his dreams. This spirit of innovation brought about new glass production techniques and his development of the copper-foil method of stained glass construction, commonly referred to as the Tiffany method. To achieve the level of detail he wanted, he had to devise a method of assembling the glass pieces—some barely 1/4-inch in width—without the heavy lead came, which would interrupt his vision of flowing, intricate lines. He devised a method of wrapping each individual piece of glass with hand-cut strips of copper foil, which were adhered with a glue made of linseed oil and beeswax. The foil-wrapped pieces were assembled and then soldered together. The copper-foil method perhaps shines best in one of the Tiffany Studios’ most noted creations, the Wisteria Lamp, which comprises more than 1,000 pieces of glass.
